Pushing Through Your Comfort Zone

I was watching a TV show called Year of Adventures Lonely Planet with their host Ben Fogle. You can find out more on the Discovery UK channel. Watch the short video below to see how adventurous this guy is.

Do you remember when you were young, care free and life was so much simpler? We didn’t have a care in the world except getting outside and exploring. Whether that was hanging out with our friends, going to movies or taking long bike rides.

I remember as a young teenager, how I would head out for day long bike rides with my brother and some of our friends. My mom would pack us a lunch and off we would go for hours on the weekend. Once summer time hit, we would do this several times a week provided we did our chores around the house.

So, what does this have to do with the title of this article? My point is this – whenever we are feeling less than empowered to challenge ourselves, we need to push through our comfort zones, no matter what it is.

Life is about living and finding purpose in our lives.

Do you really want to be 65 years old having regrets? I know that I certainly don’t want that. This is why I push myself daily to do things that others are not willing to do today, so that our family can have those things in the future that others won’t.

After working all day and getting home around 8 PM tonight, I relaxed for about an hour, then got off my butt and decided that I needed to write my article today. It was like, what should I talk about tonight? Then after doing some channel surfing, I found this TV show mentioned above on the discovery channel. I was like, what the heck are these guys doing?

I could have simply justified not doing that article tonight and nobody would have noticed except me. No matter what your personal goals are in life, nobody will do it for you. If something is important enough for you, then find the internal drive to just do it. This is what many people call their “Why”.

It’s that internal burning desire that you will just get it done and overcome all obstacles and challenges in your life. The same can be said about this Ben guy. He pushes himself beyond his comfort zone to see how far he can stretch as a person.

Whether you are just starting your life in your 20’s, 30’s or 60’s, it’s never late to reach for your goals. One thing is certain – “if you think you can’t or if you think you can – you are right either way”. So, what are you doing today to move those goal posts that much closer to you?

Looking back 7 plus years ago, I had a desire to learn about internet marketing, SEO – search engine optimization, ranking websites and how to actually build a website. That was definitely beyond my comfort zone when I first got started. It was not easy either because I’m a visual learner. I would have someone explain it to me and I would be like –what do you mean? Then, I would have the person show me via a video or a conference room. The point here, I kept at it until I could master all the various elements above.

The same philosophy applies to your health and wellness. Maybe you have been overweight and trying to lose weight for a few years, but lack a direction on where to start. By the way, check out my in depth article on losing weight the healthy way. I’ve got some good overall tips on how to reach your goals.

Here are a few specific tips to pushing beyond your comfort zone:

1. Create new challenges for yourself – This is really the zest of life. I think that is the reason we often find ourselves bored with our lives. This means, sitting down and contemplating where you want to be in 1, 3, and 5 years. Explore new opportunities, friendships, relationships etc.

2. Look for different work opportunities – Perhaps you are really bored with your current job because you’ve been doing it for many years now. I realize this can be really scary giving up a stable job. However, what is life without a few new challenges. No, I’m not suggesting you quit cold turkey. However, there are many things you can do to create new opportunities, like starting a home based business. This can be done on a part time bases. Once you replace your income and it’s steady for say 6 to 12 months, then you will have an option.

3. Educate yourself in something new – Maybe you have been thinking of a new career and need to upgrade your skill sets. Most companies have courses that you can take on your own time at night and the best part, in many cases; they will actually pay for them. Now, this will take longer, so don’t put this off when starting with a new company.

There are also tons of online opportunities to take courses nowadays. In fact, more and more schools are at least offering this option. Be responsible and take action.

4. Get into shape – This will impact your life in dramatic ways. No matter your fitness level, just start by doing something each day. Even if you can only do a few minutes, it will have long term benefits.

Wherever you are right now in life, you have choices. Perhaps, you wanted to start your own home business and lack the right information and guidance. Maybe, you are stuck in crappy job, with a burning desire to quit and find something else. The point is you need to just start doing it. Live life like there is no tomorrow waiting. Have a sense of urgency to get something going today.

Make it a great day!
